Dr. Kent Dean was born and raised in Hope Mills, North Carolina. He graduated from the North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1987, where he met his future wife and professional partner, Dr. Julia Dean. The couple married in 1987 and, together, established Southern Oaks Animal Hospital, opening the practice in May of that year.

With a passion for small animal medicine, Dr. Dean’s professional interests focus on orthopedic procedures and surgery. His veterinary career also included extensive work with equine patients, a passion that has been carried forward by his daughter, Dr. Kentley Dean, who joined the family practice in 2017.

Beyond clinical practice, Dr. Dean has dedicated significant service to the veterinary profession and his community. In 2012, he was appointed by the Governor of North Carolina to serve on the North Carolina Veterinary Medical Board, where he served until 2022. During his tenure, he held the position of President from 2017 to 2019. Dr. Dean currently serves on the Cumberland County Board of Health, contributing his expertise to public health initiatives within the community.

Dr. Dean and his wife, Julia, are proud parents of two grown children, Nick and Dr. Kentley Dean. Their family includes Pippa, a Boxer, Henle, a Himalayan cat, and several horses. When away from the practice, Dr. Dean enjoys spending time on the family farm, boating at the beach, traveling, and supporting his children’s involvement in showing Arabian horses. His commitment to veterinary medicine, community service, and family has made him a respected and valued member of the Hope Mills community for nearly four decades.
